My passion for pianos - Gabor Gyongyosi, piano tech
I graduated from the Liszt Ferenc University of Music in Budapest, School of Musical Instrument Making and Piano Repair in 2001. I gained my workshop experience in the former Kozmosz, now Opera Piano Room and Steinway&Sons showroom and service center, under the guidance of master László Cseke. Although during my school years the main focus was on the repair of acoustic pianos, during my studies I turned to electromechanical pianos of the seventies, which became the subject of my thesis. I like to repair and tune acoustic pianos, but I also specialise in the restoration and servicing of old electric pianos, the only one in our country to do so. I can give new life to these old instruments, which are nowadays appreciated again. In the last 20 years I have been and still am at the service of almost all musicians who use these instruments, from the greats of the Hungarian jazz scene, the Hungarian House of Music, the Opus Jazz Club to Gábor Presser. Over the years, mainly Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, Hohner Clavinets and Yamaha CP pianos have turned up in my workshop near Budapest in Göd.

Rhodes piano
Rhodes is a relatively simple piano in technical terms and has only few parts that are easy to adjust. One key to a well-functioning instrument is to replace worn parts in the right way. Although many people nowadays do these DIY, my experience is that know-how is necessary to do a perfect job.
Wurlitzer electronic piano
The Wurlitzer electric piano has a sophisticated piano action. Functionally, quite similar to an upright piano action with a different design. Its maintenance is a precise job, and the adjustment of the parts of the mechanism has a great influence on the playing feel. For this type of instrument, it is particularly important to keep the inside clean and as dust-free as possible, as static dust can cause not only mechanical problems but also electrical problems. The electronics of this instrument are also more complex than other electric pianos such as Rhodes.
The soul of Clavinet's operation - after replacing the necessary parts that have worn out over the decades - is to adjust the action of the keyboard to operate with perfect ease. The meeting of the tangents with the strings underneath is also critical to achieving a smooth and responsive playing feel. A Clavinet that hasn't undergone a major overhaul in the last 40-50 years is certainly worth a major job and there are some very good solutions for noise reduction in the electronics today.
Hohner Clavinet
The action and strings of Yamaha CP pianos are identical to those of a concert piano, except for a few details. Consequently, they require the same special tools and materials for servicing. The repair and adjustment of such pianos is a specialised field which - let's say - does not fall into the category of DIY. The same applies to replacing strings and tuning in general.
